Properties Of Matter
course introduces the student to the basics of Forces between atoms and
intermolecular forces, attractive and repulsive forces, surface tension,
capillarity, elastic properties of solids. The course prepares students to be
aware of and able to predict why physical phenomena occur in the physical world
they will work in.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
the end of the course the student should be able to:
Distinguish between the general physical
properties and characteristic properties of a material.
Explain Forces between atoms (solid, liquids
and gases) and intermolecular forces, attractive and repulsive forces.
Carry out calculations to compare
characteristic properties of a variety of substances to predict behaviour such
as its elasticity etc.
Carry out subsequent experiments to measure
the Young’s modulus of a cantilever, loaded beam
formula to simple problems.
Discuss low pressure measurement instruments
