Course Description

The course will explore the nature of social security and social protection, typology of social security and social protection systems, fundamental concepts in social security and social protection systems, risks, population covered, adequacy of cover, premiums, maturity of benefits and solvency, requirements for effectiveness of social security and social protection management. Skills for analyzing major issues in designing and managing social security systems in modernizing societies; Social safety-nets existing at various levels of society, namely, at the family, community, employer and state levels; Evaluation of social security systems.
COURSE AIM
This course will empower students with knowledge and necessary managerial skills for analyzing major issues in designing and managing social security schemes in modernized societies; Social safety-nets existing at various levels of society, namely, at the family, community, employer and state levels; Evaluation of social security systems.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course students should be able to:

  •  Internalize the meaning, nature and purpose of social security and protection.
  • Outline the possible social security and social protection systems
  • Demonstrate knowledge on the strength and weaknesses of existing social security and social protection systems in Uganda and Africa.
  • Apply knowledge and principles of social security and social protection systems in their social work practice.
