The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, also known as Ranking Web of Universities, released Uganda’s latest University rankings. According to the 27th January 2020 release, Makerere University ranked 1st followed by Mbarara University of Sicence and Technology and Kyambogo University as the 2nd and 3rd respectively, while Kampala International University (KIU) ranked the No 1 Private University and 4th Overall in Uganda. KIU has gained one position higher compared to the July 2019 Webometric ranking, with Gulu being pushed one place behind KIU. The top five Universities, according to Webometrics, are also among the top 100 Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Among the metrics published is the Transparency Ranking of all World University for openness, impact, presence and excellence indicators, only three (3) Universities in Uganda made to the global list, namely Makerere University (MUK) with 37,636 Citations, Kampala International University (KIU) with 6029 Citations, and Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) with 2078 Citations. Research output is key for Webometrics, including not only formal (e-journals, repositories) publications, but also informal scholarly communications.

Furthermore, Webometrics Rankings revealed that Strathmore University in Kenya and Kampala International University in Uganda are the best private Universities in East Africa. According to the Vice Chancellor of KIU, Dr Mouhamad Mpezamihigo, “this latest release is yet another Milestone and a good reason to celebrate given that barely a week ago, KIU was named the Gold Award Winner in the Education Sector Category for being the leader in export of Education services as per the records of the Uganda Exports Promotions Board 2019 ranking. KIU has undoubtedly become the industry leader and a centre of knowledge creation as was recently remarked by Prof A.B.K Kasozi, the former and pioneer Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education”. Dr Mpezamihigo added, “KIU staff, students, internal and external stakeholders are much appreciated because it is their commitments and focus that has earned the University this fame. Let’s all work hard to maintain the lead and find ourselves in the very near future as the No 1 University among both the public and private Universities in Uganda”. He attributed this success not only about KIU’s market dynamism but also the reality that KIU is successfully transforming into a world class University premiering in all aspects of quality delivery of University Education”, the Vice Chancellor stated.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is a ranking system for the world's Universities based on a composite indicator that takes into account both the volume of the web content (number of web pages and files) and the visibility and impact of these web publications according to the number of external links (site citations) they received. The ranking is published by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) located in Madrid.

The ranking methodology used by Webometrics includes the Excellence Rank which is considered the excellent publications, i.e. the University publications in scientific fields where quality and not quantity is used, Presence Rank which is determined by the hosted number of web pages in the main domain including sub-domains, Openness Rank where the effort to start-up institutional research is the methodology used whilst considering the number of affluent files published to dedicated websites according to search engines, and finally, the Impact Rank which is an effective referendum used to evaluate the quality of contents, counting all the external links that the University web domain receives from third parties.

The aim of the Ranking is to improve the presence of academic and research institutions on the web and to promote the open access publication of scientific results.
