Uganda’s COVID-19 deaths have entered double figures after the Ministry of Health announced 2 new deaths, bringing the total number to 11 from the 4,108 samples tested on August 12.

The 2 individuals, both residents of Kampala are a 60-year-old male of Indian origin who perished at International Hospital Kampala (IHK) and a 55-year-old Ugandan male who died in the Intensive Care Unit of Mulago National Referral Hospital.

The ministry also announced 21 new cases of Coronavirus from yesterday’s tests, bringing Uganda’s cumulative COVID-19 case count to 1,353. The cases include 8 truck drivers, 3 contacts of confirmed positive cases, one returnee from South Sudan and 9 alerts from the communities.

Of the alerts, 5 are from Kampala while Masaka, Kasese, Luweero and Iganga districts registered one alert each.

28 truck drivers tested positive at the border and were not allowed into the country.

Community transmissions have continued to rise over the past week, with the high number of alert cases a particular concern, especially as contact tracing may be limited. The Ministry of Health has continually called upon people to follow its safety measures to protect themselves against infection.

On Monday, August 10, the focal person for COVID-19 response at KIU Teaching Hospital, Dr Sam Kyalema urged the general public to re-adhere to Ministry of Health guidelines on COVID-19 or risk infection.
