KIU Western Campus: In a groundbreaking initiative to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promote student well-being, Makerere University, Ndejje University, and Kampala International University (KIU) joined forces to launch the Safer Campuses Campaign at Freedom Square, Makerere University. This pivotal event marked a significant step towards creating a secure and supportive environment for students in higher education institutions.

As a key partner in the O3Plus project, KIU is at the forefront of ensuring young people in East and Southern Africa realize positive health, education, and gender equality outcomes.

The project offers a holistic approach to addressing gender-based violence and enhancing student well-being through the four complementary work streams such as institutional strengthening, student health and well-being, fostering safe and inclusive campus environments, and evidence-building through knowledge sharing.

Madam Haulah, Deputy Dean of KIU Western Campus, says that collective action is essential in creating a safe and inclusive student environment.

"The Safer Campuses Campaign is crucial in ensuring our campuses are safe havens for all students, free from GBV and promoting overall well-being. As an institution, we are committed to supporting this initiative and ensuring its success," Madam Haulah said.

Ronald Frank Ochero, a KIU peer educator, participated in a high-level panel discussion, shedding light on the challenges students face in universities that affect their well-being and studies. His insightful contribution highlighted the need for sustained efforts to address GBV and promote student well-being.

KIU's creative talents took center stage with a captivating edutainment performance, featuring a powerful song and poem on breaking the silence on GBV. This thought-provoking presentation resonated with the audience, sparking meaningful conversations and reflections.

During the event, the Yamba app was officially launched as a groundbreaking tool designed to support university students. This innovative app provides easy access to help for GBV, sexual reproductive health information, and real-time counselling, empowering students to take control of their well-being.

The Safer Campuses Campaign represents a significant commitment by participating Universities to address GBV and promote overall student well-being. By collaborating and sharing resources, the universities aim to create a secure and supportive environment for students to thrive.

KIU will host its own mini-launch on October 18th, 2024, at Western Campus, as part of the project's quarterly activities, further solidifying its commitment to this vital cause.

In conclusion, the Safer Campuses Campaign launch marked a major milestone in promoting student well-being and combating GBV. As Madam Haulah aptly stated, "Together, we can create a brighter, safer future for all students."
