Kampala International University (KIU) participated in this year’s edition of National Science Week Exhibitions (NSWE), themed "Uganda Tusimbudde: Our Science-Led Journey towards Socio-Economic Transformation", from 6th to 11th November 2023, at Kololo Independence Grounds, Kampala, Uganda. Like the previous two editions, this year’s NSWE was organised by the Science Innovation and Technology (STI) Bureau, under the Office of the President of the Republic of Uganda. The annual event aims to showcase Uganda’s Innovativeness across the different sectors, including Higher Education.
KIU showcased 17 different innovative products from different schools, colleges, and centres, from both Main and Western Campuses. The products comprised innovative solutions developed by students and staff from the School of Pharmacy, School of Mathematics and Computing, School of Engineering Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
The showcased products included - Mouth Wash Spray, Skin Cold Cream, Menostop Soy Extract, Wireless-controlled Robotic Arm, a Self-controlled IP camera system, Wireless Intercom System, Car-Parking Assistive Tool, Firefighting Robot, An Automatic Solar Panel Cleaning System, A cheap electrical Water Pump, RFID-Based Occupancy Monitoring System, Bluetooth-controlled Smart Car, Accident-Avoidance Technology for a Smart Car, Sensor-Based Cloud-Integrated Smart Bin, Virtual Reality-Based Platform for Profiling Tourist Sites, Machine Learning Based Breast Cancer Diagnostic System and an Offline Screen Sharing App for Teaching and Learning.
While visiting the KIU exhibition booth, Professor Mpezamihigo Mouhamad, KIU’s Vice Chancellor, lauded the young Innovators who were exhibiting the innovative products. “I congratulate you all on behalf of KIU Management. The University will continue to support your efforts towards Innovations, as this is a core driver of any nation’s Industrialization efforts. We are therefore committed to providing all the necessary support needed to facilitate the efforts of our Innovative staff and students”, said the Vice-Chancellor.
This year’s edition of NSWE was graced by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (Rtd). While addressing scientists, exhibitors, investors, and invited Guests on 9th November 2023, the President commended the efforts of Uganda’s innovative minds and assured them of the Government’s support. The event was officially opened and closed by Hon. Minister of STI, Dr. Monica Musenero and Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, Mrs Robinah Nabbanja, on the 6th and 11th of November, respectively.
KIU’s exhibition was jointly coordinated by the Directorates of Marketing and the Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CoEEI). “We thank the Chairman KIU Board of Trustees, for his continued support towards these events, particularly this year’s edition. The bigger goal beyond showcasing KIU’s Innovativeness, is to facilitate the transition of these Innovative products into the Commercial stream through Entrepreneurship. This is what CoEEI will be aiming to facilitate in the next 1 year and for the years to come”, shared Dr Yahya Umar, the Director of KIU CoEEI.
