My name is Geoffrey Thembo, son of the late Yeremiya Mbalibulha and Ithungu Lakeri of the Rwenzori Sub-Region, Bundibugyo. My mother, who is still alive, remains the pillar behind my success.
I proudly celebrate the achievement of a Bachelor of Arts with Education at Kampala International University’s 33rd Graduation Ceremony, a stepping stone that fills me with excitement and gratitude.
Growing up as a village boy, I began my education in a government school where hearing English was “once in a blue moon.” This challenge pushed me to transfer to a private school, where I was inspired by my peers and resolved to stay focused, believing firmly that “a pen will never fail me.”
When I walked through the gates of Kampala International University (KIU) in January 2023, my hunger to become a professional man intensified. KIU became the solution, and today I graduate as a professional teacher specializing in English Language and Literature in English.
During my time at KIU, I gained not only academic knowledge but also leadership experience. I was entrusted by fellow students in the College of Education to represent them in the University Guild Parliament (2024–2025) as their MP. I also served as Vice President of KIU’s Debate Union and as a trusted coordinator. These roles strengthened my confidence both in society and in schools, fuelling my passion for nation-building.
This confidence inspired me to contest as Member of Parliament for Bughendera County, Bundibugyo District in the recent elections. Though I lost, I embraced my personal motto: “I never lose, I either win or learn.”
Memorable experiences at KIU include the Trade Bazaar, which opened my eyes to new environments and opportunities. I am deeply grateful to the University administration for the Bursary Scheme, which supported students from humble backgrounds like mine. It was through this program, alongside the sacrifices of my mother and relatives, that I was able to attach my name to a degree.
KIU also gave me the chance to interact with people from different countries, learning diverse cultures and benefiting from a staff body that blends national and international expertise — truly providing a holistic education that builds the whole person.
Looking ahead, I aspire to apply my skills in the field and later pursue a Master’s Degree in English at KIU.
To continuing students, my message is clear: learn to navigate the storm when the winds of change blow. Remember, a winner is the dreamer who never gives up. Dreams demand action — when you wake up, you must fulfill them. Success belongs to those who fight hard.
Finally, I acknowledge the unwavering support of my loving mother, Ithungu Lakeri, my siblings, friends, and relatives who stood by me, even borrowing money to pay my tuition when needed.
Above all, I thank God for His blessings on this journey.
