Dr. Ibrahim Babangida Abubakar
Assistant Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and ResearchDr. Ibrahim Babangida Abubakar is the Assistant Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics and Research at Kampala International University, where he provides strategic oversight for academic quality, research development, and postgraduate training at the Western Campus. In this role, he supervises academic and research activities across multiple faculties, liaises with regulatory authorities to ensure programme accreditation, and supports the strengthening of teaching, learning, and research systems within the University.
Dr. Abubakar is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, with over sixteen years of combined academic, research, and administrative experience. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Associate Dean for Research and as Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning at KIU, where he coordinated postgraduate programmes, promoted research grants and publications, and ensured effective curriculum delivery and assessment processes. His earlier leadership experience includes serving as Deputy Dean and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, Nigeria, where he played a key role in faculty administration, staff development, and postgraduate coordination.
He holds a PhD in Biochemistry with specialization in drug discovery and natural products from the University of Nottingham, alongside postgraduate and undergraduate qualifications in biotechnology and biochemistry. Dr. Abubakar’s research focuses on the application of natural products in cancer therapy, infectious diseases, and neglected tropical diseases. He has an extensive publication record in high-impact international journals and has supervised numerous MSc, MMED, and PhD students, many of whom are engaged in biomedical and translational research relevant to regional and global health challenges.
In addition to his academic and research contributions, Dr. Abubakar is actively involved in professional service, editorial and peer-review activities, and community engagement. He is a member of several professional bodies and has received international awards, fellowships, and research grants in recognition of his scholarly work. Through his leadership, research output, and mentorship, he continues to contribute significantly to the advancement of academic excellence and research innovation at Kampala International University.
