IGAD Delegation Visits KIU For Partnership and Collaboration

KIU, Main Campus - On Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021, a delegation from the African Union Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Eastern Africa visited Kampala International University for collaboration and partnership. The delegation comprised Dr. Kebede Kassar, a Senior Coordinator of IGAD, and Dr. Abdi M. Hersi, a knowledge Management and Learning Expert. They were led by Mr. Ssebaggala Gamal Abdul Nasser from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The delegation was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Kampala International University, Dr. Mouhammad Mpezamihigo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Finance and Administration, Assoc. Prof. Janice Busingye, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Research, Innovations, Consultancy and Extensions (RICE), Prof. Chukwuemeka Digi.

According to Dr. Kasser, a Senior Coordinator of IGAD Programmes on Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, the purpose of the meeting was to seek areas of collaboration with KIU on the IGAD’s areas of interest.

“We have an educational programme that provides policy space, harmonizing programs, building capacities, sharing learning experiences”. He also gave an insight into the IGAD’s activities which include Teacher Training opportunities for displaced people in Sudan and Somalia.

“We want to create a network of researchers in migration and displacement. We intend to bring a network of research centers together.”

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mpezamihigo appreciated the efforts of IGAD in peace and conflict resolution. He also noted that KIU has been accommodating displaced people. He informed the delegation that the University has a department dedicated to the study of Development, Peace, and Conflict Studies.

“KIU is one of the most accommodating institutions. We have received students with disabilities that were funded by the African Union. We have been working with foreign missions and educational attaches of countries”.

Other attendees at the meeting were the Director of Academic Affairs, Ms. Agnes Lumala, Associate Dean, College of Education, Open, and Distance Learning (CEODL), Dr. Susan Akinkurolere Deputy Director Quality Assurance, Mr. Solomon Matovu
