KIU, Main Campus – Kampala International University (KIU) and Accra Technical University (ATU), Ghana’s leading technical university on Friday, April 24th, 2026, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at KIU’s Main Campus, marking a new era of academic collaboration across East and West Africa.
This union paved the way for collaboration in five key areas:
1. Academic Collaboration
2. Staff and Student Mobility
3. Joint Research and Innovation
4. Capacity Building and Training
5. Conferences and Knowledge Exchange

The signing was led by Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, Vice Chancellor of KIU, and Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, Vice Chancellor of ATU who was accompanied by Dr. Peter Arhenful, ATU Dean of International Programmes & Institutional Cooperation.
During a brief meeting at the signing ceremony, Prof. Ngoma applauded ATU for maintaining its strong technical foundation even after transitioning into a fully-fledged university in 2016:
“Often when technical institutes transition into universities, they lose touch with the technical aspect that makes them relevant to industry. ATU has preserved this strength, and we have much to learn from each other.”
He added, “This partnership comes at a timely moment as Uganda transitions into Competency‑Based Learning. Together, we train industry‑ready graduates who close the unemployment gap”.
Prof. Acakpovi echoed this vision:
“KIU and ATU share a common mission—education for employment and job creation. This partnership brings West Africa and East Africa together to tackle Africa’s challenges, especially youth unemployment, and to produce graduates ready for industry.”
During the event, Dr. Mundu Mustafa, KIU DVC‑Finance & Administration, also gave a detailed presentation about KIU’s Main and Western campuses. He highlighted, “KIU hosts over 42,758 students, offering 148 undergraduate programmes, 96 master’s programmes, and 36 PhD programmes”.
He emphasized KIU’s current 2021/2022 – 2026/2027 Strategic Plan, which focuses on quality teaching and strong research collaboration. With ATU’s core philosophy of “Education for employment and job creation”, the two universities are perfectly aligned to train graduates who are both employable and entrepreneurial.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by KIU administrators:
This partnership was a true representation of strategic alliance between East and West Africa, designed to accelerate innovation, strengthen academic collaboration, and produce industry‑ready graduates. By combining KIU’s expansive academic portfolio and ATU’s technical expertise, the two institutions set out to drive solutions to Africa’s pressing challenges, particularly youth unemployment.
