KIU, MAIN CAMPUS – Kampala International University (KIU) Law Society on Monday, 10th February, 2025 officially launched the 2025 Inter-Firm Competitions, themed "Navigating Through the Intricacies of Law". The event, organized by the Office of the Dean, School of Law, aims to sharpen law students' legal practice and etiquette.
During the five-day competition, students will participate in various activities, including moots, case night, and sports gala. These events provide a platform for students to learn from law practice experts and hone their skills in a real-world setting.
Dr. Jacob Ashibi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs, emphasized the importance of mooting in legal education. "Mooting is a crucial activity for law students at all levels. I encourage you all to take it seriously, pay attention, and participate actively," said Dr. Ashibi.
Dr. Esther Kisubi, Dean of the School of Law, highlighted the significance of out-of-class activities in legal education. "These events provide students with valuable opportunities to engage with industry experts and learn essential skills not taught in the classroom," added Dr. Kisubi.
One of the judges, Lawyer Philbert Kansime Nuwagaba, a former KIU lecturer, applauded students for the active participation and noted that activities such as mooting help students apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings.
"The purpose of the moot is not just to declare a winner, but to offer students valuable lessons like; mooting experience, understanding of the law, decorum, communication, and body language," said Nuwagaba.
In unison, Pius Kiyemba, year four student and President of the KIU Law Society noted that competitions especially the moot competitions help to strengthen the art of advocacy among students.
One of the participants Zubair Kanyereketo, a year three student lauded the School of Law for putting together such a competition which signifies the university’s interest in nurturing law students into lawyers with a practical view of the law.
“I hope that the oratory skills I acquire through such competitions enable me to stand out from the many law students in Uganda,” he added.
The 2025 Inter-Firm Competitions mark an exciting milestone for KIU's Law Society. By providing a platform for students to engage with industry experts and hone their skills, the five-day event reinforces KIU's commitment to producing well-rounded and practice-ready law graduates.
