KIU, Main Campus – On Friday, August 30th, 2024, more than 70 students from the KIU Law Clinic visited the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala to acquaint themselves on how the Judiciary works. The tour was organized by the Department of Clinical Legal Education (CLE) at the School of Law and led by Dr. Olawunmi Opeyemi Obisesan, Head of the CLE Department.
The students were welcomed by Deputy Registrar HW Moses Gabriel Angualia, who explained the Judiciary's mandate to adjudicate disputes. He also discussed the various types of cases handled by the Courts of Judicature, including civil, criminal, and constitutional matters. Furthermore, he elaborated on the different stages of cases, from filing to judgment delivery and the appeal process.
HW Moses Gabriel Angualia introduced the students to recent Judiciary innovations, such as plea bargaining, mediation, and the Electronic Court Case Management System. He also shared his personal journey in the judiciary, reflecting on his 24 years of service and his rise through the ranks.
Dr. Obisesan noted, "It was an exciting and eye-opening experience for the LLB students of Kampala International University who went on an educational tour to the Uganda courts. The students are so happy and appreciate the department and university management for the opportunity to allow them to have such exposure."
The students were further guided by Ms. Halimah Kaggwa, a Senior Communications Officer at the Judiciary, who provided insights into the court hierarchy, Judiciary administration, various High Court divisions, and the roles of court personnel.
After the session, students toured the premises of the Supreme Court under the guidance of Mr. Robin Okello.
Accompanying the students were Dr. Esther Kyisuuru, Coordinator for Internship in CLE, and Ms. Brenda Nyapidi, Coordinator for the Law Clinic and Teaching and Learning.
