On Thursday, April 2, 2026, Kampala International University (KIU) marked a significant step in its student governance calendar when members of the Student Guild Union Electoral Commission were officially sworn into office at the Vice-Chancellor's office, Main Campus.
The brief but solemn ceremony, administered by University Legal Officer Ms. Nowamani Sandrah, was conducted in accordance with Article 19 of the Guild Union Constitution, which mandates the University Legal Officer to preside over the process in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor. This sets the tone for an election season that university officials hope will be defined by fairness, transparency, and civic participation.

The swearing-in drew attendance from senior university administrators, underscoring the institution's commitment to the integrity of the student electoral process.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Dean of Students Affairs, Ms. Shakiro Joyce Iluku underscored the importance of discipline and guidance in student leadership.
“We need discipline of the highest order. As student leaders, always seek guidance before making decisions. This is a mighty university that requires active and effective student leadership.”

Ms. Christine Ainebyoona, the Main Campus Administrator and Deputy University Secretary, emphasized the need for independence and transparency throughout the electoral process.
“You must demonstrate independence and transparency of the highest order. Leadership must serve the students, and it is the students who hold the power to decide who leads them. Always know where to seek guidance at each stage of the process.”
The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Finance and Administration (DVC-F&A), Dr. Mundu Mustafa highlighted the importance of professionalism and conduct:
“The Commission is expected to uphold discipline throughout the electoral process and operate with utmost independence.”
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, congratulated the newly appointed commission and described the university as a foundation for national leadership.
“The university is a training ground for national leadership. The electorate expects a free and fair election. As a Commission, you must remain non-sectarian—avoid divisions based on religion, political affiliations, or tribe.”

He further noted:
“This is not just a privilege; it is a duty that will shape your future and define the leaders you become.”
Also present at the ceremony were Mr. Boaz Tumuhimbise, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs; Mr. Shawn Kimuli, the University’s Public Relations Officer; Kijuna Frank, Guild Speaker; Niwagaba Shallot, Admin Representative; whose attendance signalled the institution’s broad support for a credible electoral exercise
