KIU Teaching Hospital Midwives Celebrate Their Day With New Mothers

KIU, Western Campus câ¬â€œ Midwives at KIU Teaching Hospital celebrated this yearcâ¬â„cs International Midwives Day with mothers who recently gave birth at the hospital.

The day, which falls on May 5th every year, is usually a time for other health workers to appreciate and celebrate midwives, but the ongoing lockdown measures which restrict groupings and human contact meant that the midwives had to look for ways of celebrating without exposing anyone to the risk of violating the government lockdown measures.

And they opted to celebrate it with mothers and their newly born babies, including a wife to one of the staff members at the hospital who gave birth yesterday.

Immaculate Tumwekwase, a midwife at the hospital, who was central in organizing yesterdaycâ¬â„cs celebrations, said the midwives gave a health education talk to mothers about effective breastfeeding, COVID-19 safety measures and also gave them updated information about the state of the pandemic in Uganda.

câ¬Å“After the health education talk, we gave them little gifts including sweets and ƒ©clairs and later shared the cake we had baked for the occasion with them,c⬝ Tumwekwase said.

câ¬Å“The gifts might have been small but the mothers were really happy. We are just glad that we could put a smile on their faces,c⬝ she added.

She also extended her thanks to the hospital administration.

câ¬Å“We are grateful to our beloved PNO (Principal Nursing Officer) and her deputy plus our HOD (Head of Department) for making our day colourful.c⬝

The PNO Sr Elizabeth Kamahoro once again congratulated the midwives.

 câ¬Å“Every good work deserves a thank you. To our midwives, happy International Midwives Day, once again. Amidst COVID-19 challenges, we can still afford to smile,c⬝ she said.
