American Evacuation Day (Libya). This is a celebration of the removal of the US from Libya on June 11 1970. In 1947, after losing the second World War, Italy relinquished its control over Libya to the United States and Britain. After the discovery of oil in the Northern African country, the interest of the US in Libya grew. But when Muammar Gadhafi came to power in 1969, he asked the foreign powers to leave but they refused.
But after long negotiations, the US finally decided to leave on July 11 1970, hence the designation of this day as a national holiday.

Kamehameha Day (Hawaii). King Kamehameha I Day on June 11 is a public holiday in the U.S. state of Hawaii. It honours Kamehameha the Great, the monarch who first established the unified Kingdom of Hawaiʻi comprising the Hawaiian Islands of Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi.

What Happened Today?

1.    In 1935, inventor Edward Armstrong gave the first public demonstration of FM broadcasting in the United States at Alpine, New Jersey. This demonstration was a major breakthrough in establishing the dominance of FM radio over the AM system and was later used in developing television broadcasting technology.

2.    In 1987, Diane Abbott, Paul Boateng and Bernie Grant were elected as the first black MPs in Great Britain. Diane Abbott was elected to represent the London constituency of Hackney North and Stoke Newington, Boateng was elected as M.P. for Brent South and Grant was elected Member of Parliament for Tottenham.

3.    In 2010, the first-ever FIFA World Cup to be held on African soil kicked off. In the opening match, hosts South Africa drew 1-1 with Mexico, with South Africa’s goal, scored by Siphiwe Tshabalala, being the first goal of the tournament and was voted one of the goals of that World Cup.
