KIU, Western Campus – Leadership is not conferred by a title but tested in service. On Monday, 4th May 2026, Kampala International University, Western Campus (KIU-WC) opened a new chapter of student governance with the official induction of the 12th Guild Union. Before a hall of former leaders, administrators, and mentors, the new cabinet and parliament were charged to lead with integrity, courage, and vision, a reminder that true leadership begins where comfort ends.
Opening the session, former Guild Speaker, Abbey Kirabo Kasajja urged Members of Parliament to stay present and connected. “Always attend faculty meetings and build good relationships with other student leaders, especially Association leaders.”
Speaking at the induction, Guild President, H.E. Antony Tuhumwire pledged unity and servant leadership. “Do not fear any challenges, for they are meant to shape us,” he said. Tuhumwire committed to leading with inclusivity and justice.
Former Guild President, Clifton George Lamtoo challenged the new cabinet to know their capacity and then exceed it. “Cabinet Ministers should know their limits and learn to stretch them,” he said, further encouraging all guild members to build a good relationship with the university management, underscoring collaboration as the engine of impact.
The Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Haulah Malkia called for character before competence, emphasizing loyalty, teamwork, discipline, and self-respect, especially in upholding an honourable dress code. Building on that, Dean of Student Affairs, Hadijah Nantale pressed the values that anchor leadership: inclusivity, integrity, accountability, and respect for university values and rules. She tasked the Guild President to submit the Guild’s semester work plan at the start of each semester, and left the room with a warning wrapped in wisdom: “A single word can build or break down a community.”
Dr. Joe Mutebi Ojera, Director of Academic Affairs encouraged Guild members to maintain academic excellence and uphold KIU’s standards. He proposed that members take a group photograph to revisit after ten years, referring to it as the 10 YEAR CHALLENGE.
Keeping it brief, University Legal Adviser, Paul Tusuubira congratulated the newly inducted Guild members and wished them a successful tenure, noting that effective leadership starts with respect for the institution’s legal framework.
In her remarks, Campus Administrator, Miriam Nikwakunzire stressed accountability, academic performance, and integrity as non-negotiable standards. She alerted Guild members to the challenges of leadership and urged them to adopt the mind-set that “Leaders never get annoyed,” emphasizing problem-solving over frustration.
Delivering the keynote address, Deputy Vice Chancellor, KIU-WC, Assoc. Prof. Eric Mabonga called the new Guild to a year of accountable service. “There is nothing to congratulate you upon. I will congratulate you next year after you have succeeded because your journey has just started,” he said, urging them to pursue leadership beyond KIU at national and international levels.
The ceremony concluded with the recognition of three members of the 11th Guild for outstanding service: H.E. Lamtoo; H.E. Shivan Namanya, Vice Guild President; and Hon. Levis Akampa, Minister for Games and Sports.
