As Kampala International University (KIU) prepares for its 32nd graduation ceremony in just a few weeks at the Western Campus in Ishaka, Bushenyi District, Abdullahi Mohamed Elmi looks forward to celebrating the completion of his Master of Public Health journey. His path to this milestone has been shaped by a clear vision, unwavering dedication, and a deep commitment to improving health outcomes in Somalia and across the region.
Abdullahi’s decision to pursue public health was born out of a desire to address the pressing health challenges facing his community back in Somalia. He was drawn to KIU by its reputation for academic excellence and its emphasis on practical training and research. The university’s approach aligned perfectly with his vision of becoming a change agent in the health sector.
“I chose KIU because I wanted more than just a degree. I wanted the tools to make a real difference,” Abdullahi reflects. “The program offered me advanced knowledge in disease prevention, health promotion, and policy development, which are essential for strengthening health systems in developing countries like mine.”
Throughout his time at KIU, Abdullahi demonstrated academic excellence and a strong work ethic. He successfully completed a research project focused on key public health issues in Somalia, an achievement that not only sharpened his analytical skills but also deepened his understanding of real-world health dynamics. He balanced coursework, fieldwork, and personal responsibilities with discipline and determination.
Beyond academics, Abdullahi actively participated in community outreach initiatives and student-led activities. He was involved in health awareness campaigns and seminars that promoted sanitation, disease prevention, and health education. These experiences helped him build leadership and teamwork skills while reinforcing the importance of community engagement.
“Some of my most memorable moments were working with communities during health campaigns, it was in those moments that I saw the true impact of public health-how knowledge and compassion can transform lives,” he says.
Abdullahi’s experience at KIU has been transformative both personally and professionally. He credits the university’s diverse and inclusive environment for helping him adapt quickly and thrive. Interacting with students and faculty from various backgrounds broadened his perspective and prepared him to work in multicultural settings.
“KIU became more than just a university, it became a home, The friendships, the academic discussions, and the cultural exchanges shaped me into a more resilient, thoughtful, and globally-minded individual,” Abdullahi shares.
As he prepares to graduate, Abdullahi looks ahead with a clear vision. He plans to apply his public health training to improve community health outcomes in Somalia, working with governmental and non-governmental organizations to develop evidence-based interventions and strengthen health systems.
He also offers words of encouragement to continuing students: stay focused, embrace challenges, and make the most of every opportunity. He believes that education is not just about personal success, but about empowering others and uplifting communities.
“To my fellow students, I say your journey matters. Every lecture, every assignment, every campaign you join is a step toward building a healthier, stronger society. Stay committed, and never lose sight of the impact you can make.”
As he celebrates this milestone, Abdullahi expresses heartfelt gratitude to the KIU faculty and staff for their guidance, to his family and friends for their unwavering support, and to his classmates for their camaraderie.
His journey at KIU has not only prepared him for a career in public health it has inspired him to lead with purpose and compassion.
