KIU, Western Campus - The School of Law, Western Campus, in collaboration with the Directorate of Research, Innovation, Consultancy and Extension (DRICE) and the Directorate of Higher Degrees and Research (DHDR), hosted a thought-provoking Public Lecture on 22nd July 2025 at the Staff Common Room, Western Campus.
The distinguished guest speaker was Hon. Justice Kwizera Amos, Resident Judge of the High Court in Bushenyi, who delivered an insightful lecture on the theme: “The Ugandan Law and Lawyer: Realities, Challenges, and Prospects for Cross-Border Opportunities.”
In his address, His Lordship offered a critical analysis of Uganda’s legal landscape, highlighting both the evolving nature of legal practice and the expanding horizons for legal professionals within and beyond national borders. He underscored how regional integration, globalisation, and the growing complexity of international business and human rights issues are reshaping the legal profession.

Justice Kwizera emphasized that today’s lawyers must be equipped to serve a global clientele, particularly in light of increasing cross-border transactions and disputes. He pointed to the rising demand for legal expertise in international arbitration, mediation, and litigation—especially in specialised fields such as intellectual property, banking, telecommunications, Islamic finance, taxation, environmental law, cryptocurrency and blockchain regulation, and space law.
Furthermore, he noted that the digital transformation of legal practice presents new frontiers for practitioners, particularly in areas like e-discovery and the electronic transmission of legal documents.
The lecture drew a vibrant and diverse audience, including Law students, faculty from various disciplines, and members of the wider university community—reflecting the growing interest in the intersection of law, technology, and global practice.
