RSTMH Appoints KIU Medical Student Steven Lubega as Student Ambassador

KIU, Western Campus - The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) has appointed Steven Lubega, a fifth-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student at Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus, as a Student Ambassador.

Lubega joins a global cohort of student ambassadors representing countries including the United Kingdom, Cameroon, Germany, Nigeria, Ghana, Nepal, Bangladesh, Italy, Uganda, the Republic of Congo, Benin, and the United States. His appointment reflects RSTMH’s commitment to fostering leadership and collaboration among emerging voices in tropical medicine and global health.

As a Student Ambassador, Lubega will promote RSTMH’s mission by raising awareness across KIU and the wider Ugandan medical community. He will serve as a strategic link between RSTMH and medical students in Uganda—facilitating engagement, knowledge exchange, and professional development.

Lubega’s track record in public health advocacy is well established. As a Millennium Fellow (Class of 2023), he led a high-impact Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) campaign across ten districts in Western Uganda. His initiatives have included school-based outreach, campus engagements, and community mobilization efforts aimed at improving health outcomes.

In 2023, Lubega completed the Getting Started with Writing and Publishing Your Research Online course, equipping him with critical skills in academic writing, research methodology, and publication. He is also an active member of more than 20 global organizations, including RSTMH, ESMO, AACR, CNS, SOLDA, ASN, and GSSA.

Currently, Lubega is spearheading a university-led One Health initiative addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). His long-term goal is to integrate surgery, oncology, and public health to develop patient-centered, evidence-based solutions that strengthen health systems globally.

The KIU community proudly congratulates Steven Lubega on this prestigious appointment and celebrates his continued contributions to global health leadership.
