KIU Student Bags Gold Medal for Uganda at East Africa Karate Championships

KIU, Main Campus - On Tuesday, 11th February 2026, Kampala International University (KIU) Main Campus proudly welcomed the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) and the Swedish Teachers’ Union for a landmark visit that set the stage for new collaborations in education.
The delegation was first received by KIU administrators led by Dr. Mundu Mustafa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance & Administration), alongside Prof. Regina Ejemot Nwadiaro (DVC Research, Innovations, Consultancy & Extensions), Dr. Jacob Eneji Ashibi (DVC Academic Affairs), Ms. Christine Ainebyoona (Deputy University Secretary), and other Deans, Principals, and Directors.

In his presentation, Dr. Mundu Mustafa introduced KIU to the guests and highlighted the College of Education as a hub for training future teachers. He emphasized the importance of partnerships that encourage students to join UNATU for professional growth and support as they transition into the workforce.
“Partnerships like these ensure our students are not only trained as teachers but also prepared to thrive in professional bodies that safeguard their welfare and growth,” said Dr. Mundu Mustafa.
Speaking on behalf of UNATU, General Secretary Filbert Baguma Bates underscored the value of union membership:

“Joining the union makes negotiations on salaries and welfare easier. Many voices are stronger than one. We prepare you for life after university so you can get the best out of your investment in education.”
From the Swedish Teachers’ Union,Bjorn Almersved highlighted the global benefits of union participation:
“Encouraging students to join the union and experience these benefits would be a tremendous achievement.”
Violeta Risteska added:
“This dialogue shows how much we can achieve together—because one is not strong, but millions are stronger.”

Later, in a session facilitated by Dr. Wanjala Gidraf Joseph, Principal of the College of Education, lecturers and students engaged the visitors in discussions on:
- Academic standards & teacher education practices
- Curriculum delivery & professional development
- Student welfare, leadership, and growth
- The role of UNATU in teacher development

The UNATU delegation was headed by General Secretary Filbert Baguma Bates, while the Swedish Teachers’ Union was represented by Bjorn Almersved, Violeta Risteska, and Olive Kranetz.
This visit strengthened ties between KIU, UNATU, and the Swedish Teachers’ Union—laying a foundation for impactful partnerships that empower teachers and students.
