PhD in Public Health (By Research)
Admission Requirements
In addition to the Common Regulations for the admissions requirements for the Degree of
Doctor of Philosophy at KIU, e.g.,
- The standard minimum entrance qualification for registration for any of the two PhD pathways is a Master’s degree from a recognized university in a subject-appropriate to the programme to be studied.
- The applicant must have studied the subject of interest at the Master’s Degree level for those interested in PhD by Research.
- An applicant is considered for admission into the PhD programme upon submission of (i) Two reference letters, one of which must be from an academic referee (ii) A research concept note following the format in Appendix 1 (DHDR Hand Book, 2019).
- After admission and registration, the student shall present the concept to the doctoral committee in the presence of DHDR within 6 weeks of admission.
(i) The committee shall advise the student on the concept content, novelty and
feasibility among other issues
(ii) The committee shall nominate supervisors to assist in the revision of the concept
paper
- Within 2 weeks of concept presentation, the student shall submit two (2) copies of the amended/revised concept; one to the respective head of department (HOD) and another to the Director, of Higher Degrees and Research (DHDR).
- After receiving a copy of the approved concept and minutes of the presentation to the Doctoral Committee from the college/school/faculty administrator, DHDR will appoint supervisor(s) to assist the student develop a proposal following the KIU research proposal format (Appendix 2, DHDR Handbook, 2019).
The following shall also apply.
- For Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medicine: Any holder of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B.) degree from a recognized University of not less than three years standing.
- For a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health: A master’s degree in Public Health or related field (such as psychology, sociology, gerontology, nursing, social work, allied health professions, and others)
- For a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmacy: Bachelor of Pharmacy with one year of internship experience, or Doctor of Pharmacy degree with one-year clerkship experience; Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and one year of post-qualification experience. Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: medicine, veterinary medicine, industrial chemistry, pharmacology, and biomedical sciences provided that the candidate has a postgraduate diploma in a relevant area of pharmaceutics
